2   Skeleton 1188: Osteological Analysis: Age and Sex

The remains of Skeleton 1188 were well preserved and so a full assessment of the age and sex of the individual could be carried out. Sex was assessed using morphological features from both the skull and pelvis. This indicated that the individual was male. Whilst the pelvis contained some features that were both male and ambiguous, the skull was very robust and masculine.

These are the auricular surfaces from Skeleton 1188. They show subchondral bone destruction, often associated with old age. The results of the assessment of the pubic symphyses, which also show age related changes, confirmed that this individual was likely to have reached at least the age of 50 before he died.

The cyst burial from the chapter house, therefore, was likely to have contained the remains of an old aged male. His height was reconstructed from measurements of his legs (femur and tibia) and this showed that he was about 5'8" (1.75m) tall, slightly above average for the medieval period.
